"zones of variability", homoplasy or simply ontogenetic stage?

This article presents evidence of a character-state that originated as a late-ontogenetic-stage transformation subsequently becoming a from-the-start character-state.

Was there any need to discuss "zones of variability", high levels of variability and high levels of homoplasy?
