This collection of papers highlights research performed under the auspices of the Future of Marine Animal Populations (FMAP) program, a component of the Census of Marine Life (CoML) (www.fmap.ca). The overarching goal of the FMAP program has been to analyze and synthesize global patterns and trends in marine species abundance, distribution and diversity, and to model the effects of fishing, climate change and other key variables on those patterns. This work has been done across ocean realms and with an emphasis on understanding past changes and predicting future scenarios.
FMAP researchers have developed statistical techniques to determine long-term changes in marine animal populations and ocean ecosystems, large-scale patterns and trends in marine biodiversity, and the dynamic movement and behavior of large marine animals. Close collaboration with statisticians and mathematical modelers has enabled the proper processing and analysis of large data sets and integration of multiple data sources. The following articles are presented in order of publication date and new FMAP articles will be added to the collection as they are published.
